Domestic Manufacturing – Buy American, Buy America, Buy Jay R. Smith Mfg. Co.

Eighty three years ago, my Grandfather started our business in a brownstone in New York City. My Father, Jay R. Smith grew the company. I am the third generation of leadership. I have spent most of my life in this industry. I am exceedingly proud of our people, our representative network, and our facility in Montgomery, Alabama.

Today, everyone is jumping on the Buy American band wagon. Companies are saying they comply with every regulation, produce goods in the USA, buy domestic castings, and so on…. We have been silent but I feel you need to know that we HAVE ALWAYS been able to comply with these regulations and the requirement of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

To US, being a USA company means:

Having a quarter of a million square foot manufacturing facility;

Having hundreds of trained members on our production team; and

Having in house capability, to:

  1. Machine castings. From a simple drill and tap operation to a state of the art CNC operation.
  2. Assembly operation. From fabricating trench drain to assembling and testing backwater valves; from making wall hydrants to assembly of drains; or just simply shrink wrapping material for better handling.
  3. Polishing castings. From automatic machines to hand polishing, to state of the art stroke polisher for extremely large items.
  4. Chrome Plating. We have two completely separate lines to run ferrous and non-ferrous material.
  5. Porcelain Glass Enameling. We run an enamel furnace where we take our domestic castings and apply porcelain glass enamel. We also have a complete spray paint operation in our enameling department.
  6. Metal Fabrication. From a water jet cutter, to a plasma cutter, to a laser cutter; you name it and we can do it! And we do it all in Montgomery, Alabama, U.S.A.
  7. Pattern Shop & Tool Room. We make our own patterns in-house. Our people go through apprenticeship programs to become certified by the Department of Labor. With over 83 year’s worth of patterns, located at foundries throughout the USA, we have the people in place to support and maintain them.

Our operations and patterns support more than 20 different foundries throughout the United States. In addition, we purchase steel, hardware, and other components from a variety of other domestic sources.

I felt confident that everyone know our company, our history, and our capabilities. With so much information and misinformation out there, I want you to be aware---that if you have a Buy American, Buy America, and PA Steel Certification construction project that Jay R. Smith Mfg. Co. is your source. We are proud to represent you and our country. We can help you meet these requirements or any other requirements you may have at hand.

Regards,

JAY R. SMITH MFG. CO.

Jay L. Smith, President and C.E.O.

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Buy American Act

The intent of the AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT (ARRA) that President Obama signed into law on February 17, 2009 is to reinvigorate our economy with new projects that put Americans back to work. There is also a provision in the act that invokes the BUY AMERICAN ACT, which will help bring more manufacturers into the process and thus compound the economic boost by allowing more industries to support new projects.

Visit the US Government’s Acquisition Central Website to review the clauses and approved countries in the BAA provision, which greatly expands products choices for builders and investors.
